Paula's Patch: A Minnesota Garden

The Great Backyard Bird Count February 18, 2013

Are you counting birds? Today is the last day to count for GBBC 2013. Be sure to submit your counts online for each day you counted.

Yesterday was a record-breaking sighting day for us. We were traveling by car to go out for our Valentine’s Day celebration and to run errands. Along our travels, we counted 3 Bald Eagles 8 Red-tailed Hawks. These sightings were just incidental for us; we weren’t intentionally birding or watching nests. Exciting!

In other news — did you see this story? Thank goodness this owl was OK! Did you know that when the mercury drops, Great Horned Owls gear up for courtship? Get the details in this article by Audubon Magazine.

Happy Birding!

  1. Amazing owl story, Paula! I loved the Audubon article too; we have a great horned owl in our woods; I’ll keep an ear out for it now. I usually hear it in the fall before dawn once the cicadas quiet down.
